How EV Readers Work: The Technology Behind Extended Vision

What Makes EV Readers Different?

If you've ever wondered why traditional reading glasses feel so limiting, it comes down to one thing: they only focus at a single distance. Typically 14-16 inches. Great for a book in your lap. Not so great for everything else.

Extended Vision Readers—EV Readers—take a fundamentally different approach. They use digitally surfaced lenses that provide clear vision across multiple distances, creating a graduated focal range that works the way your eyes actually move through the world.

The Technology: Digitally Surfaced Lenses

Unlike old-school bifocals with their visible lines or standard readers with their one-trick focus, EV lenses are precision-engineered with a smooth gradient. The power shifts gradually from the bottom of the lens (for close-up reading) to the top (for intermediate and distance vision).

This isn't the same as progressive lenses you'd get from an optometrist. EV Readers are designed specifically for the reading-and-beyond range, which means they provide a wider, more comfortable reading zone than progressives. Less head tilting. Less eye strain. More usable lens area where you actually need it.

The Three Types of EV Readers

Not all extended vision is created equal. Different activities call for different ranges, which is why EV Readers come in three distinct types:

EV6: Computer & Desk

Range: 18 inches to 6 feet

The EV6 is built for modern desk work. Your phone in your hand, your keyboard at arm's length, your monitor a couple feet away, and a colleague across the desk—all in focus without switching glasses. (This is why computer glasses and reading glasses aren't the same thing—different distances need different solutions.)

Like all EV Readers, the EV6 has blue light filtering built into the lens—not a coating, but part of the lens material itself. If your day involves bouncing between documents, screens, and conversations, this is your lens.

EV20: Home & Office

Range: 18 inches to 20 feet

The EV20 expands your range significantly. Read your book, check your laptop, and see clearly across the living room or conference table. This is the versatile all-rounder for mixed indoor activities.

Whether you're cooking while following a recipe, watching TV while scrolling your phone, or moving between tasks in an open office, the EV20 keeps everything in the usable range.

EVinfinity: Near & Far

Range: Up close to infinity (optimized for near and distance, not middle)

The EVinfinity is designed for a specific use case: seeing up close and into the distance, while skipping the middle. Check your phone or sheet music, then look up to see the road ahead or the trail in front of you.

Not designed for laptops or TV—EVinfinity is for drivers, hikers, musicians, and anyone who needs crisp near vision and distance clarity without the in-between.

EV Readers vs. Traditional Readers

Traditional reading glasses focus at one fixed distance. Pick them up, see your book clearly, look up—everything's a blur. You're constantly putting them on and taking them off. (For a deeper comparison, see our guide on EV Readers vs. Traditional Reading Glasses.)

EV Readers give you that same crisp reading vision at 18 inches, but the focus extends outward. Look up from your book and your friend across the table is still clear. Glance at your computer and it's sharp. You stay in the moment instead of managing your eyewear.

EV Readers vs. Progressive Lenses

Progressive lenses try to do everything—reading, intermediate, and full distance—in one lens. The trade-off? Each zone gets a narrow corridor of clear vision. You end up tilting your head, hunting for the sweet spot. (We explore this in detail in EV Readers vs. Progressive Lenses.)

EV Readers take a different approach. By focusing on specific distance ranges rather than cramming everything into one lens, they maximize the usable area where you need it most. Wider reading zones. Less distortion. More natural eye movement.

Think of progressives as trying to fit three rooms into one small house. EV Readers give you one or two spacious rooms instead.

Prescription Options

EV Readers are available in standard magnification powers from +1.00 to +3.00, just like traditional readers. No prescription needed—just pick your power. (Not sure what power you need? Learn about how reading power changes over time.)

Need something more specific? Custom Rx versions are available for the EV6 and EV20, which can accommodate astigmatism and other prescription requirements.

Finding Your EV Reader

The right EV Reader depends on how you spend your time:

  • Mostly at a desk or computer? Start with the EV6.
  • Mixed activities around the house or office? The EV20 covers more ground.
  • Need near and distance, but not middle? The EVinfinity handles your phone and the horizon—perfect for driving, hiking, or playing music.
