Which EV Reader Is Right for You? EV6 vs EV20 vs EVinfinity

The Short Answer

If you're not sure which EV Reader to get, start with the EV6. It covers the distances most people need most often—your phone, your keyboard, your screen, and the person across the desk. For about 80% of our customers, that's the right choice.

But if your day looks different, read on.

What Each Lens Actually Does

All EV Readers use the same digitally-surfaced lens technology. The difference is the range of distances they cover.

EV6: 18 inches to 6 feet

The EV6 is built for focused work. If most of your day happens at a desk, workbench, or kitchen counter, this is your lens.

You'll see clearly:

  • Your phone in your hand
  • Documents on your desk
  • Your computer screen
  • A colleague sitting across from you

You won't see clearly:

  • Across a large room
  • Your TV from the couch
  • Distance (driving, outdoor views)

The EV6 gives you the widest, most comfortable reading zone of all three lenses because it's not trying to do too much. It's optimized for the near-to-intermediate range where you do close work.

EV20: 20 inches to 20 feet

The EV20 extends your range significantly. You get everything the EV6 offers, plus clear vision across a room.

You'll see clearly:

  • Everything the EV6 covers
  • Your TV from the couch
  • Across a conference room
  • A music stand or sheet music
  • People approaching from across the room

You won't see clearly:

  • True distance (driving, outdoor views)

The EV20 is ideal if you move around during your day—between your desk and a whiteboard, between your kitchen and living room, between tasks that require different working distances. It's also popular with musicians, teachers, and anyone who presents to groups.

EVinfinity: Near and Distance (Not Middle)

The EVinfinity works differently than EV6 and EV20. Instead of covering a continuous range, it's optimized for two specific zones: up close and into the distance—while skipping the middle.

You'll see clearly:

  • Your phone, scorecard, or sheet music (near)
  • The road ahead while driving
  • The golf course, trails, scenery, the horizon

You won't see clearly:

  • Your laptop screen
  • Your TV
  • Intermediate distances (3-15 feet)

This makes EVinfinity a specialized choice. It's designed for people who need to read something close, then look up at the distance—drivers checking GPS then watching the road, golfers reading a scorecard then tracking a ball flight, hikers checking a map then scanning the trail, musicians reading sheet music then watching a conductor across the stage.

If you spend significant time at a computer or watching TV, EVinfinity is probably not your best first pair.

How to Decide

Choose EV6 if:

  • You work primarily at a desk or computer
  • Most of your visual tasks happen within arm's reach to about 6 feet
  • You want the widest, most comfortable reading zone
  • You're not sure what you need (it's the safest starting point)
  • You already have distance glasses or don't need distance correction

Choose EV20 if:

  • You move around during your day—home, office, workshop
  • You want to wear one pair from your desk to your TV to your kitchen
  • You're a musician, teacher, presenter, or retail worker
  • You need to see clearly across a room while also reading up close
  • You want more range than EV6 but don't need true distance

Choose EVinfinity if:

  • You specifically need near vision plus distance vision
  • You drive frequently and want to read your phone then see the road
  • You golf, hike, bike, or do outdoor activities where you check a scorecard or device then look into the distance
  • You're a musician who reads sheet music and watches a distant conductor
  • You already have EV6 or EV20 for desk/home and want a pair for driving or outdoors

What About Multiple Pairs?

Many of our customers end up with more than one type of EV Reader—and that's often the smartest approach.

Common combinations:

  • EV6 + EVinfinity: EV6 stays at your desk, EVinfinity for driving and outdoor activities
  • EV6 + EV20: EV6 for focused computer work, EV20 for moving around the house
  • EV20 + EVinfinity: EV20 as your everyday pair, EVinfinity for driving

Think of it like shoes. You probably don't wear the same pair to the gym, to work, and to a wedding. Different situations call for different tools.

Still Not Sure?

Here's the simplest test: Where do you spend most of your waking hours?

  • At a desk or workstation → EV6
  • Moving around home or office → EV20
  • Behind the wheel or on trails → EVinfinity

If you're genuinely torn between two options, start with the one that covers your most frequent activity. You can always add the other later.

What About Prescriptions?

All EV Readers are available in standard magnification powers from +1.00 to +3.00—no prescription needed. Just pick your reading power like you would with any readers. (Not sure what power you need? Your reading power will change over time, so it's worth checking.)

If you have astigmatism or need a specific prescription, Custom Rx versions are available for EV6 and EV20. EVinfinity is currently available in standard powers only.

One More Thing

Whichever lens you choose, every pair of EV Readers includes blue light filtering built into the lens—not a coating, but part of the lens material itself. And we'll craft them to your exact pupillary distance for optimal clarity.

Custom-made for your eyes. Ready in about two weeks.
